Why Too Much Salt is Harmful for Guinea Pigs?

Guinea pigs are not capable to sweat like we do to dispose of excess sodium and have no use for extra salt. Putting extra worry on the kidneys from a mineral or salt is not best for their pretty bodies. A dietary imbalance of phosphorus and calcium can cause serious bladder problems. Extra minerals, coupled with the potential for dehydration from too much salt, puts your guinea pigs at danger for bladder stones or sludge. Guinea pigs, like rabbits, are prone to forming urinary tract calculi. These bad uroliths can be located anywhere in the urinary tract and are generally composed of calcium salts. Once they have formed, surgery is almost forever needed to get rid of them and they are notorious for returning.

Small portion of salt would not hurt, right?

Maybe no, maybe yes. Many guinea pigs enjoy the flavour of salt, just like we do, and will go to town on a mineral or salt wheel. Anyway, this does not mean they should. Some lucky humans does not seem to suffer quick ill effects from too much bad food, but that does not make it a best idea. Guinea pigs are not capable to make these decisions for themselves, so it is up to us to offer only safe treats and food. Offering a fit treat (like a slice of fruit or sprig of cilantro) or a safe chew will be just as appreciated as a potentially dangerous item like a mineral or salt block.

Healthy Supplements

While guinea pigs do not need mineral blocks or salt, it is value keeping an eye on the vitamin C intake. Guinea pigs, as well as humans, have a special need for vitamin C because they are not capable to make it in their bodies. Luckily, a top standard pallet with stabilized Vitamin C and feeing a big selection of vegetables meets the 25 mg need perfect for most guinea pigs. Bell peppers and in particular are amazing source of Vitamin C.

Ill, recovering, or pregnant guinea pigs may need an extra boost. A lactose-free chewable tablet may help - Just ensure it does not have too much sugar or sweeteners like xylitol.

Feeding your Guinea Pig a variety of fresh vegetables every day, will ensure they get a balance of  set of nutrients - No mineral or salt block needed.
